DON McCULLIN
Don McCullin is a 79 year old photographer
and photojournalist, now resigned to landscape and nature, he used to be a war photographer,
which he is most known for. He went to both Vietnam and the Falklands wars, but
also worked in England and America photographing in the streets.
The images he took are often of important
historical events and so it will be hard to use his work to help my own,
although I might emulate his style of using high contrast black and white,
which I believe adds drama and detail.
I also think, although it may apply to all
or most street photographers, that McCullin concentrates on faces. Faces are
normally the focus of his photographs even if the photo is there to demonstrate
something like poverty or famine. I think the faces add a human element to the
photographs.
TONY RAY-JONES
Tony Ray-Jones was added to the national
media museum as his photography depicts a very interesting part of British
history. With his archive holding 700 photographic prints, 1700 negative
sheets, 2700 contact sheets, 10,000 colour transparencies and various notebooks
and interviews with his friends and family.
The book Only in England has an interesting
collection of his photos taken of normal people in England. I find it
interesting how you can tell people personality in the photographs, despite the
moment only lasting a fraction of a second this is something I will hope to
accomplish in my pieces.
Ray-Jones often took multiple photos of the
same situation as someone’s expression or stance could change, changing the entire
photo. I do not know whether this is would be possible for me as my film is
limited.
